After the following the Scenic Bernina route from Milano via Tirano to Sankt Moritz I was happy to be walking to my hotel, the Hotel Soldanella. After walking the steep uphill climb from the station to towards Sankt Moritz Dorf and discovering I could have just used the escalators from the station up to the village I arrived at the Belle-Epoque style building.  It is not the typical building you would expect in an alpine landscape, but the “grand” hotels built in the early 1900’s all featured this style in the new and upcoming tourist resorts in Switzerland at the time. It all reminded me of my stay at the M Gallery Royal St. Georges in Interlaken.

 

I entered the hotel at the entrance located in about the middle floor of the hotel, as the hotel was built up against the hillside, above the entrance you had the floors with the rooms, below you had the restaurant, function rooms and all technical spaces of the hotel. At check-in I was greeted by a very friendly women, checking me in very swiftly and providing me every information I needed, even going as far as looking up for me where and which supermarket was still opened so I could buy some supplies for my travel on the next day.

The Room

After opening the door with a real key, not a keycard as is common nowadays, I entered the corner room. It was decorated in a classical style, with 2 beds next to each other, a closet and a desk with a chair and the minibar and coffee and tea facilities located under and on top of it. The room even sported a small balcony with a table and chairs to sit on and enjoy the view.

 

The best part of the room however was the bathroom, whilst small it was clearly recently refreshed and designed in a way that the space could be used in the most optimal way. While the toilet and washbasin where rather standard the shower must have been the best hotel shower I have ever had, with various massage functions to be selected using push buttons and contrary to the massage shower in Turin everything worked flawlessly.

 

The Breakfast

As mentioned before the hotel restaurant was located one level below the lobby, and sporting the typical belle Époque style. When entering the room you could see the beautiful alpine scenery from the windows at the opposite side of the entrance. The breakfast in the morning consisted of a small buffet with bread, fruit, yoghurts and cold cuts. Of course in true Swiss fashion you had a display of different Swiss cheeses to choose from and some Gipfeli to satisfy your Sweet tooth. Tea, coffee, water and juices where of course also available in a self-service setup.

 

I was very satisfied with my stay in Hotel Soldanella, a classic hotel with a very family style service. If I ever visit Sankt Moritz again I will definably consider staying there again.
