Antwerp Pride exhibition ‘Together.’ at M HKA Museum of Modern Art

The Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst van Antwerpen (M HKA), the Museum for Modern Art in Antwerp, is hosting ‘Together.‘. Allegedly it’s Belgium‘s first LGBTQIA+ dedicated exhibition.

As any museum anywhere on this planet right now M HKA has coronavirus countermeasures in place. A dedicated route through the premisses, nifty arrows, disinfected earphones and disinfectant gel when you need it.

The ‘Together.’ exhibition is not large. It’s one semi-large circular room with a myriad of objects and videos. Don’t forget the safe space item in the roomette.

About the exhibition

The exhibition curated by artist Philip Huyghe. The exhibition runs from 6 August to 6 September.

“We invited several artists, including Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen, Marijke De Roover, Philip Huyghe and Stef Van Looveren, to work together in a bubble of their own on themes that strengthen the LGBTQIA+ community, and create an inclusive exhibition. The invited artists such as Jack Davey, Kasper Bosmans, Jacolby Satterwhite, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin and Megan-Leigh Heilig aim to use their visual language to shape an environment that celebrates diversity as a quality that brings exciting and challenging ideas to the world we all live in.”

This year was to be the festive year that would celebrate the first ever gay pride parade. Fifty years ago, on 28 June 1970, exactly one year after the infamous Stonewall riots, the first parade took place in New York. These two historical events mark the birth of the LGBTQIA+ Civil Rights Movement, which has managed to implement its agenda around the world, thereby bringing about one of the most important social shifts of our times.

Because of the coronavirus countermeasures, this year will be the first time without a parade, manifestations or celebrations.

The organisation of Antwerp Pride has therefore decided to program smaller events under the name Together we Pride. They will take place from 5 to 9 August, in compliance with the applicable safety regulations.

“The M HKA is proud to present TOGETHER., the very first LGBTQIA+ exhibition in our country which also marks the start of Pride 2020.”
