MANCHESTER | Science + Industry Museum

Inspired by the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, we travelled by train to England in March. Combining ESC host city Liverpool with the industrial heritage of Manchester. Manchester to Liverpool was also the first steam railway line ever. A perfect pretext to travel to The North.

The Science + Industry Museum is a large museum dedicated to showcasing the city’s rich legacy of innovation and industry. The museum is situated in the historic Castlefield district, and it occupies the buildings of the former Liverpool Road Railway Station, which was the world’s first passenger railway station.

The museum’s collections span over 250 years of technological development, from the Industrial Revolution to the present day. It includes exhibits on a wide range of scientific and industrial topics, including textiles, computing, communications, energy, and transportation.

Some of the museum’s notable exhibits include a working replica of the world’s first stored-program computer, known as the Manchester Baby, a collection of historic steam engines and locomotives, and an exhibition on the history of Manchester’s cotton industry. The museum also features a range of interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, designed to engage visitors of all ages with science and technology.

‘Manchester Baby’.

The Science and Industry Museum is one of the most popular attractions in Manchester, and it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. It is open daily, and admission is free, although some special exhibitions may require a ticket.

Renovation

Unfortunately when we were there in March 2023, more than half the museum was closed off for renovations. So while the exhibits on computing an d the cotton industry were interesting, we didn’t get to see big machines or visit the former railway station.

We expected to spend several hours there, but we toured it quickly instead.
