REVIEW | Hotel Indigo Bath

Summer 2023, my boyfriend Sam wanted to go back to London to visit some more of the city. We decided to tag on a visit to Bath to explore a bit more of the United Kingdom.

After arriving by Eurostar from Brussels we dashed across London from St. Pancras to Paddington to catch our onward train to Bath. It was a GWR service towards Bristol, at that day exceptionally short formed of a 5 coach set instead of the scheduled 9 coach unit. Despite not having seat reservations we managed to find ourselves some free seats for the enjoyable journey to Bath.

Upon arrival at Bath we only had a small walk from the Bath Spa railway station to our hotel for the night, the Hotel Indigo Bath. It is located at the South Parade, hemmed in between the historic city centre and the Lower Avon river. This gives it a perfect location to explore the entire city of Bath on foot.

The hotel consists of a series of Georgian town houses. The small historic entrance and tiny reception area make it look like a small hotel. However the hotel is actually much bigger than you would expect.

We were lead to our room by the concierge as the hotel is such a maze we wouldn’t have found it otherwise. We had to go down to the basement level, leave the main building, cross the interior courtyard (with some beautiful looking garden rooms, which as a downside didn’t provide much privacy due to the large windows and people passing through) and subsequently enter a different building at the other side of the garden.

We were given a room on the third floor. The hotel had pride itself on giving us an upgraded room (due to my IHG Platinum Ambassador status) by sending us an e-mail in advance and mentioning it again at check-in. However when we entered the room where had the feeling that if that was an upgrade, we wouldn’t want to know what a basic room would be like.

The room was not only relatively small (due to it being an old building they can’t change a lot on the foorprint) but also rather weirdly put together. There was a nice and comfy bed in one corner (luckily with power plugs and USB sockets at both sides of the bed) . In another corner there was a small desk, the other corner contained the wardrobe with the complementary minibar inside of it (stocked with some water, coke zero and some beers).

The TV was put on a chest drawer in between the entry door and the door to the bathroom, at the side of the bed. This provided an angle that was really awkward and uncomfortable to watch TV, I would probably have mounted it against a wall elsewhere.

The bathroom itself was not bigger than a walk-in closet. The towel rack was above the toilet, but you had to take away the towels if you wanted to use the toilet. The wash basin was tiny but luckily the walk-in shower with rainforest head was delightful.

They also used very nice products in dispensers and offered the full range of hand soap, body lotion, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. They even offered a small soap bar for those who prefer it.

In the morning breakfast was served in The Elder restaurant in the main building. It offered a small buffet with some basic items while you would order your main hot dishes from a menu. For a price of GBP20 I thought this was a very good offering. Sam however was not a fan of the breakfast as it was a bit too “exotic“ for his taste, he prefers a bog standard hotel buffet for his breakfast.

All in all we did think the Hotel Indigo Bath was a nice place to stay. The staff was all very friendly and professional. We absolutely loved the décor as it was a nice mix of contemporary design and the Georgian heritage.

The small downsides where the small size of the bathroom and the weird way the bedroom was put together, but this could be vastly different in a different room. We could definably recommend a stay here if you ever find yourself visiting Bath.
