NORTH CAROLINA | Walmart Supercenter Leland

Easter 2025. I’m visiting my uncle and aunt in Leland, North Carolina. It’s my first trip of two to the United States in 2025. I haven’t seen them live since February 2020 just before the first lockdown and I haven’t travelled to this area since 2019. I’m flying with SAS and Delta. The itinerary: Brussels in BelgiumCopenhagen in DenmarkAtlanta in GeorgiaWilmington in North Carolina.

I love a Walmart. We don’t have these megastores in Belgium. And for me, The Walmart Supercenter in Leland, NC is thé Walmart. Because it’s across the road of Magnolia Greens, where my uncle and aunt live.

Introducing Walmart

Walmart Inc. is an American multinational retail corporation headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. Founded on 2 July 1962 by brothers Sam and James “Bud” Walton in Rogers, Arkansas, it has grown to become the world’s largest company by revenue and the largest private employer globally, with approximately 2.1 million employees as of 2025.

The company operates a vast network of 10,771 stores across 24 countries, under 46 different names. In the United States, Walmart’s operations include various formats such as Supercenters, Discount Stores, Neighborhood Markets, and Sam’s Club warehouses.

Internationally, Walmart has experienced mixed success; while it maintains successful operations in countries like Canada, the United Kingdom (through ASDA), Central America, Chile (Líder), and China, it has withdrawn from markets such as Germany, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and Argentina due to underperformance.

Low-low prices

Walmart’s business model focuses on offering a wide variety of general merchandise at low prices. The company has also invested in e-commerce and technology, acquiring several online retailers and tech companies to enhance its digital presence. In 2025, Walmart updated its logo for the first time since 2008, making subtle changes to modernise its brand image.

As a publicly traded family-owned business, the Walton family retains significant control, owning approximately 46% of the company primarily through Walton Enterprises. Doug McMillon has served as President and CEO since 2014, overseeing the company’s ongoing expansion and adaptation in the global retail market.

What do I look for in a Walmart?

Why do I want to visit a Walmart? Socks and briefs. I like to buy local underwear and since South Korea 2024 I make it a mission. I was slightly disappointed by the offering, but at least it wasn’t kept behind glass as in New Orleans

So? I enjoyed this Walmart, and it was nicer than the ones in New Orleans, Toronto in Canada and Mérida in Mexico.
