City of Antwerp annexes Borsbeek, which becomes the tenth district on 1 January 2025
On Monday 18 December 2023, the municipal councils of both the City of Antwerp and the Town of Borsbeek approved the merge. Borsbeek will become the tenth district of Antwerp. Antwerp is unique in Flanders in that it has a two-tier system of municipal government with a city council and district councils.

Leuven ft. the Great Beguinage
In January 2023, Thanh and I went to Leuven to watch Thanh’s niece perform in a play called ‘Wezen‘ (‘Being‘) by Fabuleus at OPEK. Making the best of a Sunday afternoon, we walked around Leuven, visiting the Great Beguinage, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On a colder than anticipated Sunday in March 2022, Oriol took me for a surprise one-day road trip to the Netherlands for a hike. First we walked the Moerputten Bridge near ‘s-Hertogenbosch, we then went to Gorinchem (also spelled as pronounced Gorkum or Gorcum), to Dordrecht and we ended the excursion at Willemstad.

AfricaMuseum in Tervuren near Brussels
In December 2021, we visited the AfricaMuseum or Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) in Tervuren. A historic building and institution in Belgium, it obviously has a controversial subject, as Belgium had the Congo, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as a colony. When one mentions colony, one mentions abuse, exploitation and worse.
Rainbow flags in every city and municipality in Flanders
Monday – 17 May – is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT). For many years now, the ‘official’ LGBTQI movement has organised a visibility action by asking cities, communes, municipalities and districts in Flanders to fly the rainbow flag.
