REVIEW | ‘Welkom Aan Boord’ ft. Brussels Airlines shows reality of an airline

Brussels Airlines, production company Geronimo Entertainment and television station VTM are very prod of ‘Welkom Aan Boord‘ (‘Welcome On Board‘), a new reality show where ground staff, cabin crew and pilots are followed during their duty hours and on layovers. From Sunday 9 February 2025, you can watch the show on VTM and its app, VTMGO

In episode 1, we follow flight attendant Briek and his coworkers to Stockholm, in search of a hot Swede and some fermented fish. Axelle flies her boyfriend Axel to Milan. Senior purser Saskia deals with broken in-flight entertainment in business class before flying to Nairobi. Merveille has to deal on the ground with smoker on the tarmac and an iffy visa for Kenya. Captain Thierry succeeds at bringing a very bumpy landing coming from Cotonou in Benin to a good end.

While the recipe for such reality shows is not groundbreaking anymore, following airline in the air and on layovers is novel. Geronimo says it’s a first. Could be.

In his introduction, the manager from Geronimo emphasized how important brand collaborations are nowadays. As we skip traditional commercials, such collaborations have gained quite some importance.

Entertaining, informative and intriguing

‘Welkom Aan Bood’ is entertaining, informative and intriguing. The SN staffers have been well cast. You can tell the protagonists are comfortable being followed by a camera crew. The coworkers who are more ‘extras’ in the show are often a bit less sure what they can do or say. Or not say and do.

Certainly Briek has not a strict filter. He doesn’t shy away of conceding one of the allures of flying is being able to flirt during layovers. He’s only 22 (at the time of filming) and and fortune teller predicted he would find true love when he’s 25. So three more years to fool around.

Axelle and her captain (I forgot his name), show us how important calculating the weight of passengers and cargo is and the weight is distributed. No, you definitely don’t turn the key, start the engine and fly away.

Captain Obvious

The voice-over has quite a few ‘Captain Obvious’ moments, but as the show is geared towards a general public, that’s understandable.

So?

Yes, I’ll continue to watch. It makes me want to fly with SN soon, but my next flight with them is only in June.

The show’s main language is Dutch and the target audience is Flemish.
