Florida Solo Road Trip round-up

In May 2022, our friend and colleague Dennis De Roover travelled for the first time in his life – solo – outside Europe. He set his sights on a road trip in Florida in the United States. He’s so kind to share his story.

I drove all the way back to Miami Beach for a last night in Florida. I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Miami South Beach. Unlike what the name suggests this was my least favorite hotel of the entire journey. There was a bullet impact in the elevator they didn’t restore, breakfast was horrible and even though paid in advance, they tried to charge me in the end. But the staff was most friendly, I do must say.

During my last night in Florida I had a drink with a local in Miami Beach. I told him about the big presence of cops in the streets. He explained me that during the COVID-19 crisis people from all over the US came to Miami Beach to have parties in the streets and that it got out hand quite a few times. But now that police is actively present law and order have returned.

Back in my hotel I realised what an achievement my solo journey really was. I drove 833 miles around this beautiful state. I visited four cities and five theme parks. I had been to places where television series like ‘Miami Vice‘ and movies like ‘Scarface‘ were shot.

Being a solo traveler I had numerous chats with Americans. I did this all on my own!

I flew back to Brussels via Washington Dulles International Airport. My fear of missing out has faded a bit. I guess I have finally become part of my group of seasoned travelers.
