In May 2022, our friend and colleague Dennis De Roover travelled for the first time in his life – solo – outside Europe. He set his sights on a road trip in Florida in the United States. He’s so kind to share his story.
The last park I visited was Epcot. It’s a sort of utopian city celebrating the achievements of mankind. It opened in the early eighties of the past century. A geodesic sphere housing the attraction Spaceship Earth is the most known landmark in the park.
All attractions are pieces of art. I ended up liking this park the most of the three I visited. From the curvatures and planetary figures of ‘Mission: Space‘ to the pavilion The Land housing the attraction ‘Soarin’ Around the World‘ and ‘Living with the Land‘. It’s all so beautifully put into architecture and decoration!
Further down the park you have a big lake surrounded by several pavilions that form a sort of permanent world’s fair.
Expect a very US take on countries like Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Mexico and the United Kingdom. Luckily I love a good cliché!
In the American part of the world pavilions you have an inside rotunda vaguely suggesting the Capitol rotunda. In this perfect acoustic environment you have the a cappella group ‘The Voices of Liberty‘ singing patriotic and religious songs. I was wary at first, but actually really liked this performance.
