When all shops can open on Monday 11 May in light of coronavirus COVID-19 deconfinement, it will be special. The City of Antwerp introduces on-way shopping streets and keeping right for pedestrians.
“By keeping right we want to avoid people crossing each other”, says alderman for Small Businesses Koen Kennis (N-VA) in Het Nieuwsblad. The measure will be implemented in streets with small pavements but also on the Meir.
Car-free areas such as the Wilde Zee will become on-way streets, even for pedestrians.
Portaloos
The alderman says there will be no crush barriers, but other signage. There will also be portable toilets or portaloos as people will not be able to access toilets in cafés, bars and restaurants.
