The 17th edition of Antwerp Pride takes place from Wednesday 7 to Sunday 11 August 2024. This year’s theme is ‘Many Voices. One Pride‘. The organising committee advocates a more militant pride, with a “we’re not going back in the closet” attitude in reaction to rising conservatism and conformism. But let’s face it: pride is also celebration. In the run up to August, let’s look at activities and events. Also don’t forget Antwerp Queer Arts Festival from 3 to 31 August.
In the olden days, ‘Human Rights Friday‘ was the umbrella term for the serious, activist side of Antwerp Pride. Nowadays, it’s called Beyond Antwerp Pride and it’s not necessarily held on the Friday before main event Saturday with the parade.
The Beyond Antwerp Pride Events take place at Play Zuid.
Community Day on Sunday 4 August
“Engaging conversations, thought-provoking opinions, inspiring encounters. The theme ‘Many Voices. One Pride’ is exceptionally suited to find better understanding and connection with one another.”
Therefore Antwerp Pride organises on Sunday 4th August, a Beyond Antwerp Pride afternoon where we place our communities at the centre of attention. The afternoon is scheduled to start at 1.30 PM and end at 6.30 PM
“Are you a member of a community or are you part of the leadership, join us in our brainstorm and knowledge exchange on how we can even further improve our communities.”
Beyond Antwerp Pride
“Beyond Antwerp Pride is the new name of the Human Right Friday from past editions. Beyond Antwerp Pride looks ‘beyond’ the solely celebratory aspect of the pride and invites you think, listen, discuss and work towards a more inclusive world. Join us as we undogmatically explore our theme ‘Many Voices. One Pride.'”
Access
“As to ensure that all our activities are accessible to all, they are all free of charge. However registration is mandatory for attendance. Moreover, registration does not guarantee that you will be able to attend the event. On the day itself we’ll employ a first come – first serve system to ensure no seats are left unfilled. In short, register in advance and be sure to be on time.”
Political debate on Friday 9 August
Many Voices. One debate.
“The national and regional elections are behind us, however in October we elect a new municipal government. How can we ensure that Antwerp remains a safe haven for our community?”, says Antwerp Pride.
Other will argue Antwerp is currently not a safe haven for the community.
“We’ll host a debate with the leaders of our democratic parties to ask the important questions. Dave Sinardet will be our host and will ensure a cordial progression of the debate. There will also be a possibility to ask questions to the speakers.”
Our debate during the 2018 elections was a big success, so we advise you to register in time.
The debate starts at 7 PM.
