On Sunday 14 September, the FelixArchief opened the exhibition ‘100 Years of Art Deco in the Archive, 1925–2025‘ as part of Open Monument Day 2025. The show highlights the rich history of art deco in Antwerp and can be visited free of charge until 8 January 2026. Students from Kunstkaai are also working on the theme of art deco this semester, in collaboration with the FelixArchief.
The FelixArchief has teamed up with Kunstkaai, a school located on the Eilandje near the city archive, to explore the world of art deco in greater depth. Several classes will spend an entire semester engaging with the theme.
As part of the project, students will visit the exhibition ‘100 Years of Art Deco in the Archive’, attend workshops where they learn how to search Antwerp’s archives, and take part in guided tours of the FelixArchief to better understand its role as a repository of the city’s heritage.
The theme of art deco offers numerous possibilities within the school’s creative curriculum. Through this collaboration, students gain a unique chance to immerse themselves in the subject by combining archival research with artistic practice.
On Monday 22 September, the first classes will follow an introductory session on how to search in the archives.
The work will culminate in a new exhibition, in which students from different study tracks present their own interpretations of art deco.
From 29 January to 26 April 2026, visitors to the FelixArchief will be able to discover how the students have transformed their research and insights into artistic creations.
The collaboration underlines the importance of heritage education. The project not only sheds light on the history of art deco but also stimulates the students’ creativity. Their exhibition will build on the original show and demonstrate how art, education and heritage can come together in inspiring ways.
The exhibition ‘100 Years of Art Deco in the Archive’, 1925–2025 runs from 14 September 2025 to 8 January 2026.
Afterwards, Kunstkaai students will present their own work from 29 January to 26 April 2026. Both exhibitions are free and open to the public.
