SBB CFF FFS announce night train to Malmö from April 2026

Starting on 15 April 2026, the Swiss Federal Railways SBB CFF FFS, together with RDC Deutschland, will introduce a new night train connection from Basel in Switzerland to Copenhagen in Denmark and Malmö in Sweden. The EuroNight will run three times per week, strengthening Switzerland’s international night train network.

Ticket sales for this climate-friendly alternative to flying have begun on 4 November 2025. The service will receive financial support from the federal government under the CO₂ Act.

Growing demand for international travel

With international travel demand on the rise, SBB CFF FFS and its partners are expanding their cross-border services and contributing to climate-friendly mobility. The new EuroNight from Basel SBB to Copenhagen and Malmö will operate year-round, three times per week in each direction, starting 15 April 2026.

Departures from Basel SBB are scheduled for Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 17:35, arriving in Malmö at 09:35 the following morning. Southbound departures from Malmö take place on Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays at 18:57, arriving in Basel SBB at 11:30.

The EuroNight offers seating for around 350 passengers across sleeping cars, couchette cars and seated coaches. It includes an accessible compartment and a bistro section between Basel and Padborg. Intermediate stops include Freiburg (Breisgau) Hbf, Karlsruhe Hbf, Mannheim Hbf, Frankfurt (Main) Süd, Hamburg Hbf, Padborg, Kolding, Odense, Høje Taastrup and Copenhagen Airport. A stop at Copenhagen Central Station is not planned for scheduling reasons, but the Danish capital can be reached in about 15 minutes from Høje Taastrup or Copenhagen Airport by S-train.

Tickets and fares

Ticket sales for the EuroNight from Basel SBB to Copenhagen and Malmö started on 4 November 2025 via the SBB Mobile app, on sbb.ch, and at SBB travel centres. Prices will be comparable to existing night train connections from Switzerland, with actual fares varying depending on refund conditions, train occupancy and the selected comfort category.

Reach Scandinavia overnight

The new EuroNight offers a comfortable and direct overnight link to Copenhagen and Malmö, the gateway to Scandinavia. From Malmö, other major Scandinavian cities such as Stockholm and Gothenburg can be reached quickly.

As the only direct train connection between Switzerland and Scandinavia, the EuroNight opens up new tourism opportunities in Denmark and northern Europe. Covering a distance of over 1,400 kilometres, the route passes through Switzerland, Germany and Denmark before reaching Sweden.

The Basel–Copenhagen–Malmö night train will be operated jointly by SBB and RDC Deutschland, a private railway company with long-standing experience in international night train services.

Night trains remain popular—but federal support remains essential

“Night trains enjoy strong passenger demand, but remain unprofitable due to high costs for rolling stock, track access fees and staff. For this reason, federal financial support is necessary for the launch and ongoing operation of the new service—both in 2026 and beyond”, SBB-CFF-FFS press release says.

Under the CO₂ Act, the federal government currently plans to allocate around CHF 47 million for night train support through 2030. However, these budgets must still be approved by Parliament.

If approval is not granted, the Basel–Malmö night train will not operate. In such a case, SBB would inform customers promptly and refund any tickets already purchased.
