Brussels Airlines, alongside its sister carriers within the Lufthansa Group, is set to introduce a new fare structure that will see the end of free hand luggage on short- and medium-haul flights. The new Economy Basic fare will include only one personal item, such as a laptop bag or small rucksack, with passengers required to pay extra if they wish to bring a standard carry-on bag.
Previously, the cheapest ticket with Brussels Airlines included both a personal item and a piece of hand luggage. The airline argues that the new fare provides day trippers and light travellers with an additional, more affordable option. Additional hand or hold luggage can be added from 15 euros.
The new fare will be introduced on a trial basis from 28 April 2026 on select routes, including services to and from Budapest in Hungary, Hamburg in Germany, Kraków in Poland, Prague in Czechia, and Stockholm in Sweden, for flights departing on or after 19 May. The airline plans to expand the fare across its entire continental network in the future.
This change aligns Brussels Airlines and the Lufthansa Group – including Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Air Dolomiti – with many other carriers that already charge separately for cabin baggage. The new fare structure offers travellers four options in Economy Class and three in Business Class, providing a clear and transparent selection tailored to individual needs.
Additionally, the existing Light fare will now include a rebooking option for greater flexibility and planning security. The gradual rollout of the Economy Basic fare will be available through the airlines’ websites and digital sales channels.
