Lufthansa Group confident in summer fuel supply

The Lufthansa Group has moved to reassure travellers ahead of the summer season, stating that jet fuel supply is stable across its network. Dieter Vranckx, chief commercial officer, confirmed that the group’s six European hubs –  Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels, and Rome –  as well as its global operations, face no immediate risk of shortages.

“At all our hubs, and indeed abroad, there are no signs from our suppliers that fuel supply will be at risk this summer”, Vranckx said. He acknowledged that while around a quarter of Europe’s jet fuel shipments typically pass through the Strait of Hormuz, the group has secured alternative sources to offset any potential disruptions.

“Imports are now increasingly reaching us from other continents, for example, from North America and Africa“, he explained. “In addition, European refineries have ramped up their jet fuel production to maximum capacity.”

With a network spanning more than 300 destinations in over 100 countries, Vranckx highlighted the group’s ability to cater to diverse travel needs. “Whether it’s a city break or a beach holiday, a short-haul or long-haul flight, whether Seville or Los Angeles, we have the right destination and the ideal flight connection for every customer”, he said.

Addressing concerns about potential cancellations due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Vranckx remained optimistic. “We do not anticipate [fuel shortages]”, he stated.

However, he reassured customers that in the unlikely event of cancellations, they would have the option to rebook or receive a full refund. “Should fuel shortages occur contrary to expectations, and flights be cancelled as a result, the customer has a choice: either they are rebooked, or they receive a full refund of the ticket price as a ‘money-back’ guarantee. It’s that simple”, he added.

Vranckx’s confidence extended beyond the Lufthansa Group, noting that partner airlines also expect to operate near-complete flight schedules during the peak season. “Demand for air travel around the globe remains consistently strong”, he observed.

“People want to fly, to discover new countries and cultures, to visit family and friends, to meet business partners, or simply to enjoy their well-deserved holiday.”

Concluding his message, Vranckx reiterated the group’s readiness. “Our airlines are ready for summer, our network is strong – our customers can rely on us”, he said. “Book your travels with confidence.”
