Lier Walking Tour

For New Year’s Eve 2022 – 2023, Steve and I spent the weekend in Lier, his childhood hometown. We had a dinner party at Philippe‘s but stayed at Guzy, a relatively new hotel. Before dinner, Steve and I explored the medieval town of Lier. 

Plans for a steam train heritage service between Brussels and Mechelen shelved

“If all goes well, Train World will operate steam train between Brussels and Mechelen (Malines), reports Gazet van Antwerpen. The service could start in 2020″, we wrote in 2019. Quod non. Minister for Mobility George Gilkinet (Ecolo) declared in Parliament it’s not happening because it’s too complicated. 

Belgians make 4.5 million day trips to Antwerp every year

Day trips remain an important pillar of tourism in Antwerp, research by Westtoer shows. It mapped out day tourism in Belgium between 2021 and 2022. During that period, Antwerp received 4.5 million day trips by compatriots, representing a turnover of 195 million euros in the Antwerp economy.

Kazerne Dossin museum in Mechelen 

In April Tim, Danijel and I visited Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen. A museum dedicated to Belgium‘s involvement to the persecutions during World War II.

Quick Tour of Burgundian and Habsburg Mechelen

In March 2021 I visited the Museum Hof van Busleyden in Mechelen for the ‘Renaissance Children‘ exhibition, telling the story of Burgundian and Habsburg princes being educated by Margaret of Austria, Duchess of Savoy.
