REVIEW | Crowne Plaza Montpellier

After arriving from Toulouse I walked to the hotel from the station, my first view of the hotel was one of amazement, such a modern building right next to the historic city centre. Upon check-in I told the clerk behind the desk that I had 2 separate reservations at which he replied that that was no problem and he checked me in. However when I returned from my morning walk the next day it turned out that he did not check me in for the entire stay and I was locked out of my room, luckily the nice lady behind the desk managed to solve it quickly for me but it still was a less than stellar experience.

The room

The room itself was very nice and modern, with a beautiful panoramic view over some orchards alongside the hotel. There was a big king-size bed in the middle of the room, complimentary water bottles and coffee and tea making facilities. The temperature could easily be configured for your own liking using the air-conditioning system and the WiFi signal was very good.

The bathroom was of a modern design, with a nice bathtub and shower combination. There was plenty of space to put all your stuff and the hotel provided nice towels and toiletries. The toilet itself was located behind a corner, to give a bit more privacy.

The Pool & Fitness

The pool was located outside on the first floor, above the main restaurant. It was unheated, but as the weather was warm enough it was nice to be able to cool down a bit. Alongside the pool where some very nice loungers and pool towels could be found at the pool bar. Inside you had a small fitness area with some basic equipment and some toilets and changing rooms.

The Breakfast

The breakfast was served in the main restaurant, and the buffet was put in different alcoves. You had one where you could find the drinks, water, juices and hot drinks. Another hosted the warm offerings and cold cuts and fruits and yoghurts. The bread selections however was on a table near the main entrance. While the basic offer was good and extensive, there were also some dishes that varied every day so you would not have the exact same breakfast if you stayed for a longer period of time.

All in all the hard product of the hotel was fantastic, unfortunately on a service level it left a lot to be desired. Staff was clearly not as well trained as they should be in terms of “difficult” bookings and most of them lacked warmth and genuine care for people. At times it felt like they were doing you a pleasure for allowing you to be in the hotel, reminding me a bit of my experience in Crowne Plaza Belgrade. While it might not have been as bad, I will most likely select a different hotel the next time I’m staying in the region.
