Suva, Fiji

Early 2020 AD. Danny and I embark on a 21st century Odyssey. On the Majestic Princess from Sydney to New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji. Back to Sydney, then to Melbourne and flying back home.

Suva is the capital of Fiji. It’s the home of half the population of the archipelago. We booked a tour comprising the Fiji Museum and the Thurston Gardens. Those weren’t exciting. The museum was okay and we learned a few things about Fijian history.

More interesting was the city tour by coach after. Our guide Mathilda gave a peek inside the daily life of Fijians. She explained how schools work, the significance of tapioca in the daily diet, the importance of back garden gardening and the yellow ribbon campaign to rehabilitate former convicts.

So the tour of Suva was quite interesting. In those to hours, we got an insight in Fiji. But not much more. Is there much more? Probably not in this type of in-and-out tourism.
