FlixTrain will begin serving Munich in Bavaria in Germany from 2028 with a new fleet of high-speed trains, marking the company’s return to its hometown.
The new service will use Siemens Vectron locomotives manufactured in Munich-Allach, with a total contract value of €2.4 billion. Munich is one of Germany’s strongest growth markets for sustainable long-distance travel and serves as South Germany’s economic hub.
André Schwämmlein, CEO and co-founder of Flix, said, “With FlixTrain in Munich, a circle closes for us — we are returning to where we started in 2013. Bavaria is a huge market for sustainable travel, and with our new trains we are also ushering in a new era of train travel here — fast, comfortable, and affordable for all.”
Christian Bernreiter, Bavaria’s Minister for Housing, Construction, and Transport, said, “FlixTrain serving Munich from 2028 with Bavarian-built Siemens locomotives is a double commitment to the Bavarian location. More competition on the rails, which does not come at the expense of local rail passenger transport, is good for passengers, and investments in modern trains not only strengthen the transport sector but also our industrial location.”
To mark the announcement, Minister Bernreiter and Schwämmlein jointly christened a green locomotive named Bayern.
The new FlixTrains are European high-speed trains with a maximum speed of up to 230 km/h. They feature barrier-free access, modern passenger information systems, state-of-the-art WiFi, and a more comfortable seating concept. The technical platform is based on the proven Talgo-230 model, already in use across several European countries. Flix and Talgo have made project-specific optimizations to ensure high operational efficiency.
