For New Year’s Eve 2022 – 2023, Steve and I spent the weekend in Lier, his childhood hometown. We had a dinner party at Philippe‘s but stayed at Guzy, a relatively new hotel. Before dinner, Steve and I explored the medieval town of Lier.
Steve chose Guzy as hotel for New Year’s Eve. It was close to Philippe’s and outside Lier’s party area.

Introduction
“Hotel Guzy is located in the heart of Lier, in the shopping street. Besides staying overnight in an Oriental atmosphere, you can also enjoy an ice cream or a waffle.
You can even find gifts here”, Visit Lier says.
Indeed, the premises of Guzy houses not only the hotel but also Guzy as ice cream and chocolate bar and Lumina, a lights and interior design shop.
You enter the hotel via the ice cream bar and there the attendant will help you. Guzy is clearly a family affair and staff is minimal yet helpful and friendly. It’s not a well-oiled machine but the atmosphere is informal.
We expected to have breakfast in the café section, but no, breakfast has a dedicated room. That is practical when the café is closed.
The room
Steve booked a three-person room as it was available and it offered separate beds. Even better, the room consisted of three rooms. A room with a large single bed, a corridor, and a room with a huge kingsize bed which could fit four people having fun. But we didn’t. And of course there’s the bathroom.
The bedrooms are sober with few pieces of furniture. But there are many power outlets, a little table with a kettle for coffee and tea.
The bathroom is also large, featuring a shower, a sink, a cupboard and a toilet. The toiletries are by Aqualine. Per person you get a small (!) tube of shower gel and a bar of soap.
Per person you also get a small towel, a large towel and a foot mat. A individual foot mat is quite something. Also, the large towel is huge. I never had such a large towel. I love to wear large towels as Roman togas. With this one, I had to hold the pick up the bottom. I felt senatorial.
We can’t complain about the room. We missed one thing. There are no hooks to hang your towels. And the – small – shower cabin doesn’t feature a little tablet to put your shower gel tube.
WiFi was very good.
The room is modern and functional. Only the lamps remind of Turkey.

Breakfast
Breakfast is served in the breakfast room. N buffet, but you get a large plate with a Mediterranean twist. The owners of Guzy are of Turkish descent. So the plate contained salami, cheese, halloumi, olives, an hard boiled egg, butter, Nutella, La Vache Qui Rit cream cheese, jam, honey, cherry tomatoes and grapes.
You get a croissant, a chocolate roll and baguette. Obviously you can have coffee and tea. You also get a carafe of orange juice.
Although it’s a nice plate with more than enough, certainly after all the Christmas and Sylvester feasting, it’s odd not to inquire of allergies or dietary choices such as being vegetarian or lactose intolerant.
And as Steve pointed out, Turkish yoghurt would have fitted the setting.

So?
Guzy is a simple accommodation, but offers a great service. Being a small 5-room place, don’t expect ‘facilities’. But the room is nice, the service is friendly and breakfast is good.
It matched our expectations. A great place to sleep in Lier.
