Brussels Airlines assessing impact of global Airbus A320 software issue – operations continue as normal

Brussels Airlines has confirmed it is evaluating the potential impact of a global software glitch affecting Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft. Belgium‘s dedicated airline, which operates 35 aircraft from the A320 family, issued the following statement on Friday evening:

“We have been made aware of a software glitch that might impact operations on Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft around the globe. We are currently gathering information to determine what actions are needed. At this moment, operations continue as normal. We will communicate as soon as we have a clearer view on the potential impact on our operations. Safety of our operations will always have our highest priority. We will publish updates on this website as soon as they are available.”

Large-scale Airbus recall affects 6,000 aircraft worldwide

The statement follows a major precautionary recall by Airbus, which announced Friday that approximately 6,000 A320-family aircraft — more than half of all active aircraft of this type — will require a software update. The manufacturer confirmed that the action stems from a technical vulnerability linked to intense solar radiation, which may interfere with critical flight data.

Airbus has acknowledged that the update programme may result in “possible operational disruptions” for airlines across the network. While most aircraft can reportedly be updated quickly, sources cited by Bloomberg indicate that around 1,000 older airframes may require more extensive and time-consuming hardware upgrades. Airbus has so far declined to provide further technical comment.

Triggered by JetBlue incident

The global action follows an incident on 30 October involving a JetBlue aircraft travelling from Newark near New York to Cancún in Mexico. The aircraft experienced a sudden computer malfunction, temporarily lost altitude and became unresponsive to pilot input. No injuries were reported, and the flight was safely diverted to Tampa. The event prompted a full technical assessment by Airbus, culminating in this week’s precautionary recall.

Brussels Airlines: no cancellations at this stage

While the airline stresses that it is too early to determine whether any of its aircraft require modification, Brussels Airlines confirms that its flight schedule is currently unaffected and passenger operations remain normal. Further communication will follow once technical assessments are complete.

Updates will be posted by the airline as soon as new information becomes available. Travellers should keep an I on their mails and the Brussels Airlines app.
