June 2022. Although I have been in Mexico before, the last time was in 1994-1995. Twenty-seven years later, Oriol and I are doing a classic tour of the United Mexican States, featuring Mexico City (CDMX); Palenque in Chiapas; Villahermosa in Tabasco; Uxmal, Mérida, Chichen Itza, Ek’ Balam, Valladolid, and a few cenotes (waterholes) in Yucatán and Tulum in Quintana Roo. We returned via Cancún to CDMX and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
We booked our main flights to and from Mexico back in November 2021. As we would end our vacation in Yucatán, we looked for a flight back from Cancún. The best option was to fly to Mexico City and then to Amsterdam. So our booking was in theory open jaw, but in reality not.
Between then and the actual travel date, KLM did change our schedule a few times without warning. So it turned out our lay-over in Mexico City would be only 1.35 hours. Very, very sharp. Too sharp.
But first, getting to the airport. We took an ADO bus to Cancún city and then to the airport. We were early at the airport. There we took the time to queue at the manned check-in desks. Oriol took the time to explain the problem, and we were put in a plane earlier to Mexico. Only half an hour earlier, but 2 hours instead of 1.35 lay-over is quite a difference.
And luckily we did get another flight, because our original flight was delayed for an hour!

In the end our flight was took off a bit late, so it was still sharp.
Mexico City
Changing at Mexico City was not easy. There were no signs for us to know were to go. We needed to change terminals, but that was not so clear. We had to take an Aerotren to Terminal 2 and there going through security. It was al a bit stressful.
But! We expected to go through customs again but no. There’s only a checkpoint wen you land into Mexico. So we arrived at the gate with a little time to spare.
The flights
The flights were all right. Very similar to the other flights with Aeroméxico and KLM on this trip so I’m not reviewing them separately.
On our flight from Amsterdam to Mexico, we were offered an upgrade to business class for around 600 euros. As we payed 750 in total, it was food for thought for the way back. But business was full.
Ah well, that’s money not spent. That’s good as well.

Arrival in Schiphol
We arrived on time in Schiphol. Oddly, our passports were checked in the corridor by the customs service. Where they looking for someone. Afterwards there was still the ‘official’ immigration into the Schengen Zone.
We had to wait for a little while for our luggage, but for the first time ever, our suitcases come out first on the baggage belt. That’s special. I guess someone must be first.
So?
Our journey home was some 24 hours from hotel to home. A long tome, but it felt okay.
