REVIEW | Colonté Hotel Origen in Valladolid, Yucatán, Mexico

June 2022. Although I have been in Mexico before, the last time was in 1994-1995. Twenty-seven years later, Oriol and I are doing a classic tour of the United Mexican States, featuring Mexico City (CDMX); Palenque in Chiapas; Villahermosa in Tabasco; Uxmal, Mérida, Chichen Itza, Ek’ Balam, Valladolid,  and a few cenotes (waterholes) in Yucatán and Tulum in Quintana Roo. We returned via Cancún to CDMX and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

As was the case with Hotel Carlota in Mexico City, Karl and Nicolas recommended Colonté Hotel Origen in Valladolid. A boutique hotel with only ten rooms. The hotel is located near the ADO bus terminal and not far from Parque Francisco Cantón Rosado, which is the city’s Zócalo.

The hotel is intimate. A front office building with the reception and the boutique to make in a boutique hotel; the garden with the pool and restaurant; and the two-stories building with the rooms.

The room

Our room was called ‘Sakits‘. It features a large bed, a wardrobe, a television, a rocking chair, a desk, and a mini private garden. The bathroom features a shower, a toilet and a sink. The shower has a door towards the private garden.

The room is spacious. There are some power outlets. Together with the light switch, they are unpractically located under the bedside table.

It is a nice room but with a major drawback. WiFi connection was terrible. We were often disconnected. Frustratingly annoying.

The shower had room for three. The soaps were presented in brandless bottles which is classy, but the five nights we we there we had no idea which was the shampoo, the conditioner and the shower gel.

There we three big towels for us to use and two bathrobes.

Breakfast and restaurant

Breakfast was served between 7AM and 12PM, which are good hours. The first day there were slow to help us, and we were on a deadline.

As in Carlota, there is no buffert, but you order from the menu. The thing is, there is little distinction between dishes served in the morning, at lunch or for dinner. After a while I missed ‘breakfasty items’. There were pancakes, yes, and something called ‘The Breakfast’.

Overall

Colonté is an enjoyable hotel. Fix the WiFi, perhaps be a bit less strict with your intimidating visitors’ policy and you’re good.
