VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) has announced on 2 April 2026 an investment of CAD 150 million (€100 million) to undertake a comprehensive modernisation of its fleet of 56 Château and Manor sleeper cars over the next five years. This initiative forms part of the company’s continued commitment to improving the passenger experience while strengthening Canada’s national passenger rail system.
CAD Railway Industries, based in Lachine, Quebec, has been selected to carry out upgrades to essential onboard systems and interiors. The work will enhance comfort, reliability, and amenities for passengers travelling on The Ocean and The Canadian, two of VIA Rail’s flagship long-distance routes.
The programme is expected to generate more than 100 skilled jobs across engineering, project management, and specialised trades. It will also contribute to economic activity in the Greater Montreal area while reinforcing Canada’s capabilities in rail manufacturing and maintenance.

In parallel, VIA Rail is progressing with the broader renewal of its long-distance, regional, and remote (LDRR) fleet. Procurement for new locomotives and passenger cars is already underway, with a full fleet replacement planned over the next decade. The current modernisation programme ensures that passengers continue to enjoy a high-quality, comfortable, and dependable travel experience during this transition period.

Alongside this initiative, VIA Rail continues to invest in the maintenance and modernisation of other rolling stock within its own maintenance centres. This reflects a balanced approach that supports both in-house expertise and partnerships with Canadian industry.
The project also underlines VIA Rail’s commitment to supporting domestic suppliers and aligning with the Government of Canada’s procurement priorities. The majority of VIA Rail’s procurement spending remains within Canada, helping to strengthen local expertise, sustain employment, and contribute to economic growth nationwide.

That’s good, maybe they will increase their business, but it is not a logical way for most Canadians to travel. They’re looking into a fast train between Calgary and Banff which is a great idea, but I don’t think it’s VIA.
I seems to me VIA has this existential conundrum: are they people movers or a tourism provider?
