In the month of April I made a week-long trip with Michel, discovering German aviation history in Friedrichshafen, Danish Railways History in Odense and navigating the sea to discover some Estonian history in Tallinn. After our stay at the Hilton Frankfurt Airport we continued by train to our next stop in Friedrichshafen along Lake Constance (Bodensee), crossing the Black Forest on the way.

After arriving at the Friedrichshafen Flughafen station it was just a matter of crossing the street to reach our hotel for the night, the Ibis Friedrichshafen Airport Messe. We chose this hotel as it was close to the airport for our 7:00 AM departure to Billund via Düsseldorf in a few days, enabling us to maximize our sleep that day. The building looked like a straight out of the box standard Ibis, and it was indeed. We received a very friendly welcome at the reception with all necessary explications.

We had a room allocated to us on the 4^th floor with a view over the apron where we could already see a Dornier 328 of Sun Air of Scandinavia parked, a plane we would be flying ourselves in two days.

The room was a standard Ibis room, with two single beds, a desk along the wall and a flat TV mounted on the wall opposite the bed.

 

Just like in the Hilton Frankfurt Airport we had a lack of available powerr outlets, only two outlets where available in between one bed and the desk area, no plugs at the other bed. The bedding itself was simple, a duvet with one single small and thin pillow but a comfortable matress.

The bathroom was a single pieces module implanted into the room. It contained a washbasin, a toilet and a walk-in shower. While it was not very spacious it was large enough to get the job done and you could still put some stuff alongside the washbasin, so this was a plus compared to the Mercure Avignon Centre Palais des Papes.

 

The downside was that they only provided one towel per person, providing a second (smaller) towel would have been a nice touch. Of course there were no individual toiletries provided but a large dispenser instead, but this is something you expect of an Ibis so not a bad point.

The Restaurant

As there where not a lot of dining options in the neighbourhood we decided to have dinner in the hotel one night. It was located down the side of the reception is a sort of communal space, also used as a bar and lobby area.

Drinks where served on a coaster featuring the Accor logo, which was a nice touch. They served a very good hamburger, and Michel was even served a second portion of complimentary rice to go with his Thai curry when he asked for it. Also the apfelstrudel as a dessert was of a good quality and nicely presented.

 

The breakfast

Breakfast was served in the same ground floor communal space as the bar-restaurant in the evening. For a lower budget hotel they offered quite a nice breakfast spread. They had the usual cheeses, cold cuts, bread and pastries, yoghurts, fruits, vegetables and some scrambled eggs.

 

A nice touch where the cold boiled eggs painted in colourful Easter design as Easter was coming up soon. The most ‘fun’ items was the ‘bake your own waffle’ station, it was surprisingly easy to use but it did not deliver a waffle we expect a waffle to be in Belgium. Nonetheless the waffle was perfectly edible if you poured enough toppings on it.

 

All in all the Ibis Friedrichshafen Airport Messe delivered a solid product and is the best place to stay if you have an early flight to catch at Friedrichshafen Bodensee Airport.
