Visiting Lifou (Drehu), New Caledonia

Early 2020 AD. Danny and I embark on a 21st century Odyssey. On the Majestic Princess from Sydney to New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji. Back to Sydney, then to Melbourne and flying back home.

Lifou or Drehu in local language Drehu is part of the French special collectivity of New Caledonia. Its name would come from Île de fous or Island of crazy people. At least, according to our guide Eddy.

The tour brought us to a former vanilla farm where we received explanations on vanilla farming. Well… what did you expect?

Afterwards we went to the Cliffs of Jokin, where we descended a long staircase to sea level.

There aren’t really landmarks or cultural things to do on Lifou. As we don’t snorkel, we kept our visit short.

Lifou’s main attraction is being what you imagine it to be: a paradise fit for shower cream advertisements.
