It was spring 2022 with the biggest COVID-19 travel restrictions gradually being lifted it was time for the first big holiday for my boyfriend and I. As I wanted to convince my boyfriend that travelling without his beloved car can also be fun I decided to drag him along on a Mediterranean cruise on Celebrity Reflection, starting from the Italian port of Civitavecchia near Rome.
After arriving on the exotic Iberojet A320 from Brussels and our short bus tour of Madrid Airport. We walked from Terminal 2 where the bus dropped us off towards terminal 3 where our connecting flight would leave from.
As we still had some time to kill we visited the Puerta del Sol lounge which hovers as a sort of UFO over the middle of the Terminal 3 pier, right next to our departure gate. As is usual for AENA, the Spanish operator of airports, the lounge was operated by themselves instead of a third party.
While Madrid airport terminal 1-2-3 is the main hub for Air Europa it doesn’t have it’s own lounges but instead makes use of the AENA operated ones. This is however not a punishment as they are very nice and well-managed lounges.

The Puerta del Sol lounge has different seating areas, some meeting rooms and even a childs play area. Of course toilets and showers are also provided.
Contrary to our AENA lounge visit in Palma de Mallorca the buffet wasn’t served by staff anymore but reverted back to self-service. The bar had plenty of nice choices for drinks while the food was also good and plentiful. There was ample choice between hot and cold foods to everyone’s liking. It was sad that we only had a limited time here as this clearly is one of the better non-airline specific lounges in Europe.
