On Sunday 22 September 2024, the City of Antwerp will once again make its centre car-free for the twenty-second edition of the mobility festival Antwerp Shift. On that day, cars will make way for cyclists, pedestrians and other smart means of transport. Attendants will discover a wide range of mobility options in a pleasant atmosphere.
Coming Sunday, the city centre will once again be car-free from 10 AM to 6 PM. Cars will not be welcome in the area between Amsterdamstraat (Amsterdam Street) and Londenstraat (London Street), the Leien (the Boulevards), Jan van Gentstraat (John of Gaunt Street), Waalsekaai (Walloon Quay) and Scheldestraat (Scheldt Street), and the Scheldekaaien or Scheldt Quays themselves will also be largely car-free.
Extensive programme
Antwerp Shift offers a programme packed with information, a test route and interesting discounts from 30 mobility providers. In addition, Slim naar Antwerpen (Smart Ways To Antwerp) will provide visitors with tailor-made travel advice.
In addition, there are many fun and sporty peripheral activities for young and old:
- A 10-kilometre roller parade through the car-free city centre (departure at 2 PM from the skate park on Sint-Michielskaai or St. Michael’s Quay);
- Skate and BMX initiations and demos at the skate park on Sint-Michielskaai;
- Crazy bike course on Steenplein (Stone Square);
- Games and competitions at Groenplaats (Green Square);
- Craft and singing workshop on sustainable mobility in Zuidpark (South Park);
- A bike tour along new infrastructure in the city;
In addition, residents who live in the car-free zone can set up a flea market stall in front of their own home.
The full programme can be found at www.antwerpenshift.be.
Alderman for Mobility Koen Kennis (N-VA): “Antwerp Shift is there to introduce everyone, big and small, to mobility in all its forms and types. You will find dozens of mobility solutions and a range of partners: ready for conversation, ready to let you taste their offer.”
That same Sunday 22 September, there is still a lot to experience in the Antwerp city centre. Visitors can combine Antwerp Shift with other fun activities such as the children’s theatre festival BRUIST!, the roof festival DAKkan or the literary festival ZuiderZinnen.
Accessibility
In the spirit of Antwerp Shift, the city calls on visitors to definitely come to the city smartly: on foot, by bike or scooter, via shared mobility or by public transport. Those who come by car can park in a park-and-ride on the outskirts of the city or a public car park outside the car-free zone.
The Rijnkaai (Rhine Quay), Steendok (Stone Dock), Kooldok (Coal Dock), Operaplein (Opera Square) and Nationale Bank (National Bank) car parks are just outside the car-free zone and are therefore accessible.
