Danny and I were one full day in Marseille on our September 2019 France getaway featuring Bordeaux and Marseille. We stayed at the InterContinental Marseille Hôtel-Dieu.
Marseille is the second largest city in France in terms of population and the largest in terms of area. Its population is a real melting pot of different cultures.
Historic Marseille is centered around the old but active harbour or Vieux Port and is very walkable.
We indulged the cliché of the savon de Marseille (Marseille soap) at the Musée du Savon de Marseille La Licorne. For 3 euros you get to visit the small but informative museum and a souvenir soap bar.
Around the harbour
We walked to the Fort Saint-Jean, to the cruise terminal, passed the Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure and into the quaint Le Panier neighbourhood.
Quaint is the term to use. Just walk in he harbour and Panier area and enjoy the nice atmosphere. Consider having a foie gras burger at Le Bon Burger for dinner.
Marseille was a nice excursion but Danny and I were more taken in by Bordeaux. Nice to have visited Marseille. Been there, done that.
