Renovation and restoration

The famous Schoon Verdiep or Piano Nobile was restored in all its glory, but a lot of work was also done on a ‘Lighted Verdiep‘ on the 2nd floor. This ‘Verlicht Verdiep‘, named after the daylight that enters through large windows, became extra workspace so that many cabinets were given a place in the city hall. On the ground floor, a central entrance hall was created on the side of the Grote Markt.

The renovation project was nominated for the prestigious European AHI Award earlier this month. The international jury praised the prestigious project of the city of Antwerp and called this building campaign a well-considered modernization in which the design team was able to accentuate the old asymmetry of the building while making optimal use of the available space.
