ANTWERP | Start of preparatory works at Ringpark Het Schijn

In May 2024, the preparatory works for the construction of phase 1 of Ringpark Het Schijn have started. The works will take place in Deurne between the Lakborslei, Ten Eekhovelei and the Schijn river. This involves the relocation of the dog walking zone, the demolition of the structures in the allotments, the safe closure and preparation of the site for construction, and the necessary archaeological research.

Ringpark Het Schijn in Antwerp is the park that starts on the south side of Schijnpoort and continues south to the Rivierenhof park. The Schijn river and the Schijn Valley play the leading role in the park. The watercourse is again completely above ground and branched, with two islands and sloping banks. The existing entrances to the park will become neighborhood squares.

If the works for the Oosterweel connection at the Ten Eekhovelei go smoothly, the construction of phase 1 of Ringpark Het Schijn can start in early 2025. That phase includes the construction of the nature island and the park island behind the Lakborslei and Ten Eekhovelei.

In the run-up to this, the preparatory works will start today:

  • The dog walking zone behind the playground in the Ten Eekhovelei will be moved to a new temporary location, at the passage towards the pumping station.
  • The structures in the Papenhof allotment gardens are being demolished. In phase 1 of Ringpark Het Schijn, the allotments will be given a new place.
  • The site between the Ten Eekhovelei and the Schijn river will be safely closed off and prepared for construction.

Archaeological research is then carried out. A number of test trenches are being made and drillings are being done. Depending on this, a decision can be made to conduct further research.

Koen Kennis (N-VA), alderman for Mobility: “This is the start of a major metamorphosis for the spacious area around the Ten Eekhovelei. The work on the Oosterweel connection, the covering of the sunken Ring Road, the demolition of the viaduct at the Sportpaleis and the construction of Ringpark Het Schijn will prove to be a lever for the quality of life in Deurne-Noord.”

Impact work

The preparatory works have a limited impact on the neighborhood.

  • The dog walking area behind the playground in Ten Eekhovelei will be closed from Monday 27 May and moved. The dog walking zone at the new location will be open at the latest on Monday, June 10, at the passage towards the pumping station.
  • The Ring cycle path between the current dog walking zone and the pump station will be closed from Monday 27 May, as will the connection between the Lakborslei, near the former Thuy garage, and the current dog walking zone.
  • The playground in Ten Eekhovelei will remain open and accessible during the works.
