Using data from the United Nations World Tourism Organization or UN Tourism (formerly UNWTO) on international arrivals, Data Pandas has compiled a list of the most visited countries and explored what makes them so irresistible to travellers.
Some key insights
France leads the ranking with an astounding 89.4 million arrivals, reaffirming its status as a global hotspot, renowned for its rich history, cultural heritage, fine wines, and exquisite cuisine.
In second place, Spain impresses with 83.7 million arrivals, drawing visitors with its sun-soaked beaches, lively nightlife, UNESCO-listed heritage sites, and deep-rooted festive traditions.
The United States follows closely, welcoming 79.3 million visitors with its diverse landscapes, iconic landmarks, and dynamic, multicultural cities.
Asian nations also feature prominently, with China receiving 65.7 million arrivals, Turkey attracting 51.2 million, and Thailand welcoming 39.8 million, highlighting a growing global interest in Asian cultures, history, landscapes, and cuisine.
Countries with a strong historical and cultural identity, such as Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom, also register high visitor numbers, with 64.5 million, 39.6 million, and 39.4 million arrivals, respectively, underscoring the continued appeal of cultural tourism.
Ten most visited countries
Securing the top spot with an impressive 89.4 million arrivals, France continues to captivate tourists with its diverse regional cultures, historic landmarks, world-class museums, renowned gastronomy, and the romantic charm of Paris.
Spain claims second place with 83.7 million visitors. From its rich history and sun-drenched coastlines to its stunning architecture, flamenco rhythms, and the legendary running of the bulls, Spain offers an enticing blend of tradition and vibrancy.
In third place, the United States attracts 79.3 million international visitors, drawn by its vast landscapes and iconic cities. Whether exploring the bustling streets of New York, the golden beaches of California, or the thrill-filled amusement parks of Florida, travellers are spoilt for choice.
Fourth place belongs to China, which welcomed 65.7 million visitors. With its ancient heritage, diverse cultural traditions, and remarkable landmarks such as the Great Wall, China remains a mesmerising destination for explorers.
Italy secures fifth position with 64.5 million arrivals. A country synonymous with art, history, fashion, and world-famous cuisine, Italy effortlessly captures the hearts of those who visit.
Turkey, in sixth place with 51.2 million visitors, offers a unique fusion of Eastern and Western influences, from the historic grandeur of Istanbul to the stunning turquoise shores of Antalya.
Over in the Americas, Mexico ranks seventh with 45.0 million arrivals. Its vibrant culture, tantalising cuisine, sun-kissed beaches, and awe-inspiring Mayan and Aztec ruins continue to be a major draw for tourists.
Thailand takes the eighth spot, welcoming 39.8 million visitors who come to experience its royal palaces, ancient temples, fascinating folk traditions, and, of course, its world-famous tropical beaches.
Germany follows in ninth place with 39.6 million arrivals. Its stunning landscapes, historic landmarks, and legendary Oktoberfest celebration make it a favourite among travellers.
Rounding out the list, the United Kingdom secures the tenth spot with 39.4 million visitors. From its rich history and iconic landmarks to the royal charm of London and the cultural heritage of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the UK remains a must-visit destination.
