ANTWERP | Masterplan Water for Oude Landen in Ekeren

The City of Antwerp had a ‘Masterplan Waterdrawn up for the Oude Landen area in Ekeren. The stream landscape in and around that zone is a water-sensitive region.

The area in and around Oude Landen is one of the priorities in the global Antwerp Water Plan. It has therefore now also received a specific custom master plan.

This concerns the area bordered by the Kapelstraat in the east, the Prinshoeveweg – Donkweg – Lindenlei – Veltwijcklaan – De Beukelaerlaan – Ferdinand Verbieststraat – Leo Baekelandstraat in the north, the A12 in the west and the A12 / E19 in the south.

Preservation and protection

This new masterplan provides a framework for future water projects in the area. The aim is to restore and improve existing water and green structures. This helps to combat both water nuisance and drought. Residential areas are protected from flooding, while nature reserves receive extra water to maintain vegetation.

Integrated vision

The plan outlines an integrated vision for the area and shows how current and future projects, such as Rozemaaipark, can deal with water problems. It examines how solutions for flooding and drought can also offer benefits for the neighbourhood, such as recreational paths along streams, water experiences in parks and extra cooling for the residential areas.

To achieve this, the three streams that run through this area will each be given their own ‘identity’ and will also be designed as such in the future:

  • Donkse Beek: connects cultural-historical elements such as the village view of Ekeren and castles.
  • Oudelandse Beek: becomes a recreational ribbon from the Ekeren-Donk residential area to the nature reserves.
  • Laarse Beek: returns as much as possible to its natural stream course, with meanders and ecological banks. With this master plan, Antwerp is taking an important step towards sustainable water management and a resilient stream landscape in and around Oude Landen.
