Antwerp to host EuroGames in 2028?

The 17th edition of Antwerp Pride takes place from Wednesday 7 to Sunday 11 August 2024. This year’s theme is ‘Many Voices. One Pride‘. The organising committee advocates a more militant pride, with a “we’re not going back in the closet” attitude in reaction to rising conservatism and conformism. But let’s face it: pride is also celebration. In the run up to August, let’s look at activities and events. Also don’t forget Antwerp Queer Arts Festival from 3 to 31 August.

The City of Antwerp supports Davy Brocatus‘ attempt to bring the EuroGames back to Belgium. This was announced on Thursday evening during the opening reception of Antwerp Pride at Antwerp City Hall

Antwerp Alderman for Sports Peter Wouters (N-VA) confirmed the news to travel blogger and gay podcaster Sven Boutsen of Touristicogay. “As a city, we cannot directly apply, but we do support this 200 percent.”

Antwerp hosted the EuroGames previously in 2007. This bid has the ambition to bring the EuroGames to Antwerp in 2028.

What are the EuroGames?

The EuroGames are a European multi-sport event governed by the European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation or EGLSF. It is the largest multi-sport event for athletes, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation in Europe.

Every year, the EGLSF calls for candidates to host the EuroGames two years later to allow sufficient time to organise the event. Candidates must be EGLSF members and have experience with organising sport events. At the Annual General Assembly in March, the decision is taken by the membership of the EGLSF which candidate will be the host to the EuroGames.

This year’s edition is in Vienna in Austria. The EuroGames visit Lyon in France in 2025 and Cardiff in Wales in the United Kingdom in 2027. In 2026 there are no EuroGames since there are Gay Games in Valencia in Spain.

It is unclear how advanced the bid is. A formal candidacy must be filed by October.
