ANTWERP | Droogdokkensite: works begin on public space, building restoration and new construction

The first phase of the redevelopment of the public space at Antwerp’s Droogdokkensite (Dry Docks Site) beyond ‘t Eilandje neighbourhood has begun. In addition, municipal real estate agency AG Vespa has started restoring the historic Pomphuis (Pump House) and renovating the Ketelmakerij (Boiler Factory). A new building will also be constructed for youth activities.

The initial works on the Droogdokkensite began at the end of 2024 with the restoration of five dry docks.

AG Vespa is now redeveloping an area of 7,250 square metres around Dry Dock 1. The current fencing will be removed, making the zone publicly accessible. New trees will be planted, while the existing plane trees will be maintained and pruned. The existing green area will be expanded, and seating steps will be added around the dock, offering visitors a place to relax and enjoy the view.

A new entrance square will connect the buildings and the dock, and the entire public space will become car-free with new lighting. The existing car park in Sluisstraat has closed on 24 October; it will be redeveloped and used as a construction site. If work proceeds as planned, the new public space will be completed in autumn 2026.

Alderman for Urban Development Patrick Janssens (Vooruit) said: “The Droogdokkensite is the least-known part of the Scheldt Quays for many Antwerp residents. It is a place of impressive industrial heritage, historic buildings and soon also lively activities. This is not just a riverside promenade but a historic site that will host new activities for the city’s residents and visitors, with special attention to young people.”

Work has also begun on two buildings: the historic Pomphuis and the Ketelmakerij. This involves the partial demolition of adjacent structures to reveal the ornate façades of the Pomphuis once more.

Built in 1895, the Pomphuis is one of the site’s most remarkable buildings, noted for its unusual use of industrial materials such as iron-frame construction and its detailed brickwork and ornamentation. Both the technical design and aesthetic quality give the structure significant architectural value.

The Pomphuis originally housed the pumps and machinery used to fill or empty the dry dock. It will now be transformed into a multipurpose space for users and visitors of the site, while preserving its heritage value.

The Ketelmakerij, once a workshop for making, repairing and adapting ship components such as boilers and pipes, will be renovated while retaining its industrial character. The large renovated hall, together with a new, compact building at its end, will be used by the city for youth activities—continuing the site’s existing community role.

All buildings are expected to be completed by autumn 2027.

Alderman for Culture Lien Van de Kelder (Vooruit) stated: “The dry docks will become a raw and unique space for Antwerp’s culture lovers. We are creating creative breeding grounds and distinctive venues for concerts, theatre, open-air films and much more. The events dock will become a legendary festival and party location.”

Alderman for Youth Karim Bachar (Vooruit) added: “This site will be a haven for young people and new talent—a place where children and young people can build their future and become part of Antwerp’s story, at a truly exceptional location where they can express themselves freely.”

The Droogdokkensite is part of the Droogdokkeneiland, one of seven zones included in the Scheldt Quays master plan. It lies on the north-western side of the Kattendijkdok in northern Antwerp and features a distinctive riverside landscape with remarkable industrial and architectural heritage. The site includes nine historic, protected dry docks and several buildings. A master plan for the site was approved in 2022.
