ANTWERP | Northern Pavillion at Scheldt’s Northern Terrace gets revamp

AG VESPA, City of Antwerp‘s real estate agency and promotor, is revamping the Northern Pavillion (Noorderpaviljoen) at the Northern Terrace (Noorderterras) on the Scheldt Quays

The Scheldt Quays from Het Steen southwards get most attention at the moment, but the agency is also looking north.

Why this project? “We are renewing the Scheldt quays to restore the bond between the city and the Scheldt. The Northern Pavillion is located on the border zone between two sub-designs of this renovation and thus has the unique opportunity to restore this hinge point”, AG VESPA says.

Historically, the pavilion is an inseparable part of the historic hangars and the northern walking terraces, where the North Pavilion as a café formed the figurative end point on the northern walking boulevard.

This neo-Gothic pavilion is currently very outdated and no longer meets current comfort requirements. A revaluation at building level, but also at function level, is necessary in order to be a qualitative part of the revalued Scheldt quays.

What is happening?

The protected monument is being restored and completely revalued into a pavilion that can serve as a café and/or restaurant. This is done both at quay level and at the level of the walking terraces to provide maximum support for the link between the city and the Scheldt. By focusing on the rehabilitation of this monumental pavilion and high-quality architecture, this contributes to the positive amenity value of the Scheldt quays.

“Our ambition is to make this pavilion fully accessible, water-robust and sustainable”, AG VESPA says.. “The urban flood defense will run along the Noorderpaviljoen. A high-quality sustainable connection is included in the design.”

The file will be prepared in 2024 – 2025, making restoration possible during the next legislature.
