ANTWERP | Planting of trees means Zurenborg – Borgerhout Spoorpark is on schedule for summer of 2027

The relocation of a key technical building in 2025 has cleared the final obstacle for the creation of Antwerp’s new Spoorpark (Railway Park), which is set to open in the summer of 2027. The project will establish a green, two-hectare link between Zurenborg and the Luitenant Naeyaertplein in Borgerhout, running alongside the railway tracks. The symbolic start was given on Thursday 11 December 2025 with the planting of a Japanese privet.

The long-disused and neglected platform of the former Antwerp-East Railway Station station will be transformed as part of the new park. Now that Infrabel has constructed a new overhead line building several hundred metres away, the strip known as the Omheining der Statie van Borgerhout can finally be redeveloped.

Through a fifty-year occupancy agreement between Infrabel and the City of Antwerp, the site is being transferred to the city. Urban development officials describe the Spoorpark as a project that will bring breathing space and greenery to the surrounding neighbourhoods. It is intended as a natural connection between Zurenborg and Borgerhout and could eventually link up with future Ring Parks.

The Spoorpark is planned as a calm and safe route between the two districts, and city mobility leaders view it as an important new element for pedestrians and cyclists. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026, with completion set for summer 2027. The project budget amounts to seven million euros.

Antwerp-East Railway Station

Several historical railway elements will be preserved. The old brossel shed, once used to house maintenance trains, will be renovated and repurposed as a shelter and meeting spot. Platform 1 of the old Antwerp-East Railway Station will also remain, with its historic canopy set to be restored at a later stage. A new walking and cycling path will run through the park.

The detailed layout of the Spoorpark is largely fixed, although certain choices still need to be made. One open question is whether a small hospitality facility, such as a coffee bar, will be added to the park. While no decision has been taken, the option remains on the table. For now, the priority is to start construction, with further possibilities to be examined once the park takes shape.
