Vienna’s Furniture Museum

Autumn 2021. In theory we could travel to other continents, but destinations we had in mind such as Japan or the United Kingdom were impossible to plan ahead. Instead we organised a rail trip to Eastern Europe, travelling to Berlin, Gdańsk, Wrocław, Karlovy Vary, Pilsen, Bratislava, Poprad, Vienna, Linz and Salzburg. By travelling to Germany, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Austria, we explore an area which was in the (not too distant) past bonded together by the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and by Austria-Hungary.

Included in our Sisi Deluxe Ticket is a visit of the Vienna Furniture Museum or Möbelmuseum Wien.

Habsburg haberdashery

The former furniture of the Habsburg dynasty is exhibited in the somewhat hidden and forgotten museum.

Among the many thousands of exhibits amassed over five centuries, with special emphasis on Biedermeier and Historicism, one also finds a Baroque easy-chair on wheels, an imperial travel throne and praying-stools with velvet pillow-covers.

The first halls emphasize furniture choices of several generations of emperors and archdukes. Some had great taste looking further than normative over-the-top shapes and colours.

The Möbelmuseum also has a Sissy tour, focussing on authentic pieces of Habsburg furniture used in the ‘Sissy’ film trilogy

Luckily, there’s more than the monarchic Möbeln. There’s a collection of replicated interior design from the 20th century, a toilet seats corner and a look at bathrooms.

But Habsburg heraldry is never far away.

After two Habsburg-themed museums we stopped listening to the audioguide so I can’t tell you if it was good or not.
