Autumn 2021. In theory we could travel to other continents, but destinations we had in mind such as Japan or the United Kingdom were impossible to plan ahead. Instead we organised a rail trip to Eastern Europe, travelling to Berlin, Gdańsk, Wrocław, Karlovy Vary, Pilsen, Bratislava, Poprad, Vienna, Linz and Salzburg. By travelling to Germany, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Austria, we explore an area which was in the (not too distant) past bonded together by the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and by Austria-Hungary.

After experiencing ‘classic’ Salzburg, Danny and I thought it to be a good idea to go to Hangar-7 (with a hyphen, yes).

Hangar-7 is a high-tech building adjacent to Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart (SZG) hosting a collection of historical airplanes, helicopters and Formula One racing cars, and serving as home for the Flying Bulls, a private aircraft fleet stationed in Salzburg.

Hangar-7 was owned by recently deceased Red Bull founder dr. Dietrich Mateschitz. It houses the Michelin-starred restaurant Ikarus, two bars and a lounge. The building is airfoil shaped, constructed of 1,200 tons of steel and 75,000 sq ft of glass surface. ‘Hangar-8 is the name of the maintenance facility.

The venue opened in 2003. Admission is free.
On site
There a quite a few planes and F1 racing cars exhibited.
Included are:
- 2013 Red Bull-Renault RB9.
- 2010 Scuderia Toro Rosso-Ferrari STR5.
- Kimi Räikkönen‘s 2001 Sauber-Petronas C20.
- 2001-2002 IndyCar‘s Red Bull Cheever Racing Dallara-Infinity IR-01 / IR-02.
And many more vehicles and planes.
Is a visit worth it? Yes if you’re into Red Bull, planes and/or F1. You could go for dinner as well.
But we were quickly gone. It’s didn’t feel our space.
